When you first get to Viridian City, you'll find that the gym is locked because the gym leader is not there. This article will show how to get him back.

When you are in Celadon City, go to the Rocket Game Corner. Beat the Team Rocket Grunt guarding the poster. Go in front of the poster, then press A to activate the secret switch.

Go down the stairs that appear to go to the Team Rocket hideout. Go through the spinning puzzles until you find the Lift Key that turns on the elevator. From there, you'll be able to find Giovanni. Defeat him to get the Silph Scope.Advertisement

Go to the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town, where you'll find Team Rocket Grunts at the top floor. Defeat them, then talk to Mr. Fuji to go back to his house and get the Poké Flute.

When you have the tea from the lady in Celadon Mansion, go to the Silph Co. building in Saffron City and defeat Giovanni. You'll get the Master Ball from the Silph Co. president.

Defeat the remaining gym leaders until you have 7 badges.

Go to the Viridian City Gym and it will be open. It's a Ground-type Gym and the leader is Giovanni. He uses a level 45 Rhyhorn, a level 42 Dugtrio, a level 44 Nidoqueen, a level 45 Nidoking, and a level 50 Rhyhorn. Defeat him to get the Earth Badge and the TM for Earthquake.
