Make sure you're grounded in some capacity before you attempt to astral project. There needs to be something that pulls your energy back into your body, back into the room where you are.
Or, if you're not a seasoned astral projector, make sure that you're with someone who is, so they can facilitate the process and guide you through it, whether through guided visualization or just being in the room with you to pay attention to how you are responding to the process.

To astral project, you need to have an established meditation practice, since you need to be able to direct your awareness and let go at will. I also recommend doing it in the evening and not eating beforehand, because eating grounds your awareness more in your body.
It’s best done lying down. Breathe in and out for about 10 minutes, and put your awareness in the room around you. Before closing your eyes, take a look around and memorize the room. Then, close your eyes and keep visualizing the room while you’re breathing and focusing — and just let go. That’s the best way I can describe it.
If you do manage to project into your astral body, it helps to tie a thread around your body (or even just imagine doing so) to help you return to it. It sounds mental, but I accidentally did it once, and I freaked out—I couldn’t find my breath and thought I was dead. If you do it in a controlled environment and make it a practice, it can be safe. But it takes time, practice, and dedication. It’s not something you can just try on a whim—you have to warm up to it.
