Unfortunately, once the melanocytes produce melanin pigment, it is a waiting game for the pigment to dissipate over time. In the case of “tanning”, this is our body’s way of protecting the DNA within our cells from the sun’s harmful rays. Through the production of pigment, there is a shield created, almost like an umbrella from rain, so that the important genetic structure of the cell (DNA and RNA) is protected by the melanin. I instruct my patients that any evidence of skin darkening is evidence of sun exposure and should be avoided through use of a physical block SPF containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to reflect the harmful UV rays. 😊

Tanning is a temporary phenomenon and will go away within a few weeks to a few months. While you can't "quicken" the process, you can maintain a good skincare routine and good lifestyle habits and maybe spend the mornings and evenings under the sun instead of the intense afternoon sunlight which causes tanning.
