A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) is probably Sarah J. Maas’s most popular series, and one that many readers start with. It’s a romantasy series that will have you swooning over some of the main characters and cursing others. Here’s the reading order for ACOTAR:
  1. A Court of Thorns and Roses
  2. A Court of Mist and Fury
  3. A Court of Wings and Ruin
  4. A Court of Frost and Starlight
  5. A Court of Silver Flames
Maas recently announced that the sixth book in the ACOTAR series will be released in 2026, so stay tuned!

Throne of Glass is a complete series, and my personal favorite of SJM’s! The FMC is such a strong, inspirational character (and of course, there’s a beautiful love story woven into this series). Here’s my recommended reading order for Throne of Glass:
  1. Throne of Glass
  2. Crown of Midnight
  3. The Assassin’s Blade (while this collection of short stories comes first chronologically, I don’t recommend reading it first as it contains some spoilers)
  4. Heir of Fire
  5. Queen of Shadows
  6. Empire of Storms
  7. Tower of Dawn
  8. Kingdom of Ash

Crescent City is Maas’s third series. Some readers find it harder to get into, and I personally think the world-building isn’t as strong. There are also a lot of characters, character types, houses, and locations to keep track of. But, it’s still definitely worth reading, in my opinion! Here’s the reading order for Crescent City:
  1. Crescent City
  2. House of Sky and Breath
  3. House of Flame and Shadow
There will be another book in this series, but Maas is focusing on ACOTAR now so it may be a couple of years before we find out what happens with Bryce and the rest of the crew!

Other SJM fans, what do you recommend starting with? What's your favorite series?

I completely agree about the reading order of TOG! While The Assassin's Blade comes first chronologically, reading it third is crucial to avoiding spoilers for all the backstory reveals in books one and two.

I'm still pretty new to Sarah J. Maas's books, but I have read the ACOTAR series. I would say they were a pretty great entry point to her work, so you can't go wrong with A Court of Thorns and Roses as your first pick!
