What do we mean when we say “geek”?

You’ve probably heard the word in throwback sitcoms to describe the group of people sitting at a lunch table, all with glasses and their top buttons buttoned and talking about the latest installment of Star Wars. True, the word “geek” hasn’t always been a kind one, but everything changes with time, and so has the connotation of the word.

What is a geek, exactly?
Nowadays, people say “geek” to describe someone who’s super passionate about something, whether it’s video games, books, TV, painting, or anything else. They’ve invested time and energy into learning the ins and outs of something important to them, and they could talk for hours about whatever it is they’re passionate about.

Are there different kinds of geeks?
Of course! If you ask us, the main 6 types are gamers, techies, sci-fi and fantasy buffs, comic fans, pop culturistas, and anime geeks, but we’re sure that some of you would argue that other kinds of geeks are more prominent, or maybe that these aren’t the main 6. But again, there are so many types that it’s impossible to count or differentiate them all!

Geek vs. Nerd
The words are synonyms, and mostly mean the same thing, but to some people, they do have a key difference or two. However, some people say that “nerd” applies more to scholarly or academic topics, like math or science, while “geeks” are people who are more concerned with things like pop culture and “softer” sciences. Of course, that’s not the official definition of either term, so you’re free to use them however you want.
