- About 80% of Americans have a sibling.[1]
- A study at BYU found that having a sister leads to better mental health. Sisters protect siblings from feeling lonely, unloved, self-conscious, or fearful.[2]
- Another study found that having a younger sister makes boys more agreeable.[3]
- Research also shows that older sisters play an important role in raising younger sisters, and they often serve as confidantes and sources of support.[4]
- The best predictor for whether or not siblings will get along is whether the older sibling learned how to play well with other children before their younger sibling was born.
- Later in life, sister-sister sibling pairs tend to have the closest relationships and spend the most time together (compared to sister-brother or brother-brother pairs).
- For many people, the sibling relationship is the longest and most consistent relationship in their lives, lasting far longer than the parent/child relationship or a relationship with a romantic partner. With this in mind, it’s clear that sibling relationships are pretty important and influential![5]
