Exploring Gender
It’s the battle of the sexes, a tale as old as time. But whose side are you on, anyway? Are there even sides to this whole thing?
This quiz is meant to tell you if you were “supposed” to be born as a man or a woman. It’s mostly for fun, but writing a quiz that reveals your “true” gender is tricky! What makes someone a man? What makes someone a woman? What kind of traits does one have that the other can’t have? Men and women can both be intelligent, strong, funny, intuitive, kind. They can also both be frail, serious, cruel, foolish, selfish, and unintelligent. Personality-wise, there isn’t a whole lot of differences, are there? We all know a woman who “feels” more like a man, and a man who better fits our ideas of what a woman is.
You might say that they have different bodies, and you’re somewhat right, but when we talk about bodies, we’re actually talking about sex, and sex itself is a complicated thing that isn’t black-and-white. There are bodybuilder women and skinny-as-a-twig men. And reproductively, it’s not so simple, either. According to studies, about 1.7% of all people in the world have variant sexual characteristics—mixes of both male and female “parts.” 1.7% might not seem like a lot, but that’s a whopping estimated 138,414,000 people!
So what’s the real difference between men and women? The answer is: How we treat them. Society has certain perceptions of gender, and that influences how we treat each gender. We make assumptions about which “side” someone is on based on their looks and behavior, and we treat them accordingly. But those assumptions are just that—assumptions—and why should we treat anyone differently based on assumptions? And even if they weren’t assumptions, isn’t treating them differently anyway still pretty not cool?
Food for thought!
